From Term 1 this year all participants in our program will be required to wear the Ready Steady Go Kids t-shirt during class as part of our mandatory dress requirements. For decades, educational institutions around the globe have implemented compulsory dress for students. With advantages that are frequently acknowledged, and barely disputed, the uniform phenomenon is today more popular than ever. Empirical and theoretical studies have found that uniforms create a safer, more structured and positive learning environment for students of all ages. This evidence is well documented, and many teachers and parents have their own anecdotes on the benefits, here are some of the key findings that will apply to your child’s experience at Ready Steady Go Kids in 2012.

• Uniforms promote an enhanced sense of inclusiveness. When children are dressed the same they feel as though they belong to a team. This sense of belonging is an important factor in building a child's self-esteem and aids in the socialisation process.
• Uniforms de-emphasise physical appearance. For children it can be difficult to understand why they might appear different to others. Uniforms help children feel as though they look like everyone else and reduce any self-consciousness.
• Uniforms eliminate jealous and distractive behaviour. For children it is natural to vie for the attention of others and clothing (particularly in girls) is a common way for them to do so. For their peers this behaviour can be distractive and threatening and will often result in children competing for approval. Uniforms level the playing field and result in a more conducive learning experience.
• Uniforms foster team spirit and friendship. We've all felt it: when you put on a uniform you automatically feel an allegiance to the people dressed the same as you; they become your equals and, regardless of any preconceptions, you are willing to cooperate with and encourage one another to achieve your goals. For children it works the same. It's an effect that often forges strong and lasting relationships.
• Uniforms prepare children for learning. The action of dressing in a uniform prepares your child to focus; you are sending a message that they are going to class and, in our experience, children in uniform usually turn up more attentive and ready to learn.

We've seen these findings reflected in our classes as well as within our own children’s educations. Put simply, a uniform policy helps us to achieve our ultimate goal of preparing each preschooler for participation in school and the broader community.
