From Basketball Courts to Business: Renae Currie's Ready Steady Go Kids Story

Renae Currie is making a big impact in Mackay. As the owner of Ready Steady Go Kids Mackay, she has built a thriving business, created strong demand for her classes, and become a valued part of her local community. Her journey from Physical Education teacher to successful business owner is inspiring and full of energy.

Renae first discovered Ready Steady Go Kids through a friend in Townsville whose boys loved the program. She looked into it, connected with Head Office, and quickly saw the potential. With her background in sport and movement, she knew it would be a fantastic fit for children in Mackay.

At the time, Renae was a busy mother of two young boys and planned to run just a couple of classes each week. Although she felt confident leading classes, stepping into business ownership was a big move. Still, she backed herself and got started.

Demand grew quickly. What began as a small side project soon became a full time business. Renae now runs five classes a day, five days a week, with sessions at McDonalds Multisport Stadium during the week and St Patricks College on Saturdays. It is a clear reflection of both her hard work and the quality of her program.

One of the things Renae loves most is seeing children grow in confidence, coordination, and their ability to follow instructions. As a former Physical Education teacher, she knows how valuable those skills are, especially as children prepare for school.

Owning a franchise has also given Renae something every parent values: flexibility. Even with a busy schedule, she is able to do school drop off and pick up, be there for important family moments, and build a career she genuinely loves. All three of her boys have completed the Ready Steady Go Kids program and are now happily settled into school.

Sport has always been a huge part of Renae’s life. She represented the Mackay Meteorettes for nine years, was selected for multiple Queensland Basketball teams, and in 2000 she was chosen to run with the Sydney Olympic Torch as it passed through Mackay. It is a standout moment in a life shaped by sport and community.
