What to Expect at Your First RSGK Class: A Parent Guide
Starting your child's first Ready Steady Go Kids class can feel like a big step. Between juggling nap schedules, hoping your toddler cooperates, and wondering if you remembered to pack everything - it's normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves.
The good news? Ready Steady Go Kids classes are designed with both children and parents in mind. Our coaches understand that every child develops at their own pace, and our welcoming community creates space for both little ones to learn and parents to connect.
Before You Arrive
Preparation starts at home, but keep it simple. Your child needs comfortable clothes suitable for physical activity including closed-toe shoes and a water bottle. If you are coming for a trial - you don't need the uniform! We provide all of the sporting equipment designed specifically for preschool-aged children, so no need to stress about bringing gear.
Talk positively about what they'll experience. Mention they'll play different sports each week, meet other children, and work with friendly coaches. Keep expectations realistic – it's perfectly normal if your child feels shy or observes more than participates initially.
You will receive a reminder of your trial the night before, but don't forget to check your booking confirmation email for the exact class start times. Arriving a few minutes early helps everyone settle in without rushing.
Arriving at Your First Class
Arrive five to ten minutes early. This buffer time allows your child to observe the environment and other families without feeling hurried. You'll immediately notice the intentionally small class sizes – between 12 to 16 students (in our fullest classes - most have less!) – which ensures individual attention rather than your child getting lost in a crowd. Our coach ratios are 1:6 in the Get Ready class and 1:8 in the Ready, Steady & Go classes.
The check-in process is straightforward. Coaches will greet you warmly and may ask about any specific needs or concerns regarding your child. This is an excellent opportunity to mention if your little one is particularly shy, has specific interests, or needs extra encouragement. The coaches will also give your child a name tag. This is not only so the coaches can remember your child's name, but it's also important for the children to recognise letters - we are all about learning at our classes!
Settling In
Your child may initially prefer to observe rather than jump straight into activities. This is completely normal and expected. Our coaches are trained to work with children who need time to warm up to new environments and people. In our younger Get Ready and Ready classes, parents are required to participate in classes with their child to smooth this transition. We welcome siblings in prams or baby carriers. Shout out to your coach if it's getting a bit tricky - we are here to help!
Some children participate immediately, others need several sessions to fully engage. Both approaches are acceptable. The structured environment helps children understand what comes next. Classes follow consistent routines that toddlers and preschoolers find reassuring – warm-up activities, skill development, group gross motor games and circuits that build confidence gradually.
Meeting Your Coaches
RSGK coaches bring both professional qualifications and genuine enthusiasm for working with young children. All trainers possess minimum Level 1 Coaching qualifications under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme from the Australian Sports Commission and a Working with Children's Check.
Beyond credentials, coaches understand preschooler development. They use simple instructions, positive reinforcement, and patience to guide children through activities. If your child hesitates about participating in specific activities, coaches will demonstrate, provide gentle encouragement, or suggest modifications without applying pressure.
Coaches also recognise that parents need information and reassurance. They will often communicate about your child's progress.
What Happens During a Typical Class
Classes follow a structured but flexible format designed around toddler and preschooler attention spans and developmental needs. Sessions begin with energetic warm-up activities and stretching, led with enthusiasm that gets children moving and engaged.
The main portion of the class focuses on age-appropriate sports skills and activities promoting gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, balance, and teamwork. At the end of the class we finish off with a circuit/obstacle course to create an awesome sensory experience or a gross motor 'game' before gathering back in our circle to say goodbye.
Activities are entirely non-competitive. Coaches emphasise that sports and physical activity should be enjoyable. Children learn important life skills like taking turns, following rules, cooperating with peers, and building focus and concentration.
Throughout each term, children rotate through five different sports, spending approximately two classes on each sport before moving to the next. We finish each term with multi-sport week which the kids love to recap on the sports they have played throughout the term.
Building Connections Beyond Your Child
One unexpected benefit of RSGK classes is the parent community that naturally develops. While children learn sports skills, parents often form meaningful friendships with other families navigating similar stages of child development.
Sideline conversations frequently evolve into coffee dates, playground meetups, and ongoing support networks. Many parents report that RSGK classes provided their first real opportunity to connect with other local families after relocating or having children.
The consistent weekly schedule creates natural touchpoints for building relationships. You'll start recognizing familiar faces, learning other children's names, and sharing parenting experiences with people who understand the unique challenges of raising preschoolers.
What Comes Next
After your first class (which is normally a Free Trial), take time to reflect on how your child responded. Your spot is held in the class for 48 hours so you have lot's of time to think about whether to join for the remainder of the term. Some children leave energized and excited about returning, others need processing time to digest the new experience. Both reactions provide valuable information about your child's comfort level and readiness.
RSGK classes build upon each other, so consistency helps children develop both skills and confidence. The non-competitive environment means there's no pressure to master activities immediately – progress happens at each child's individual pace.
Most importantly, celebrate small victories. Maybe your child participated in warm-up activities, tried a new sport, or interacted positively with another child. These moments indicate successful engagement, even if the full class participation takes time to develop.
Ready Steady Go Kids classes offer more than just physical activity – we provide structured learning, social development, and community connection for entire families. Your first class marks the beginning of a journey that supports both your child's growth and your own connections within the local community.
